2026 Introduction to the Chinese Government Scholarship

I. Introduction to the Chinese Government Scholarship Program

1.The "Chinese Government Scholarship" is a full or partial scholarship provided by China’s Ministry of Education in accordance with educational exchange agreements or understandings signed with the governments, institutions, universities, and relevant international organizations of other countries. The Ministry of Education has entrusted the China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as "CSC") with the responsibility of enrolling international students for the Chinese Government Scholarship and managing daily affairs related to the scholarship.

2.International students who have been awarded the "Chinese Government Scholarship" must participate in the annual scholarship review (April–May), fill out the Chinese Government Scholarship Annual Review Form, and submit it to the Office of the International Student Center of the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) by April each year.

II. Chinese Government Scholarship – Country-Specific Award (Type A)

International students who intend to apply for the "Chinese Government Scholarship – Country-Specific Award" to study at USTB shall submit their applications to the study-abroad dispatching authority of their home country or the Chinese Embassy (Consulate-General) in their home country. The application period is generally from November of the previous year to March of the current year, but it may vary by country. Please check in advance.

III. Chinese Government Scholarship – Independent Enrollment Program (Type B)

Scholarship Benefits Tuition fees, accommodation fees, living allowance (CNY 3,000/month for master’s students; CNY 3,500/month for doctoral students), and medical insurance.

Program Duration

Master’s program: 2 or 3 years

Doctoral program: 4 years

Chinese Language Training

1 year of Chinese language training is available for students who study in Chinese and have only passed the HSK Level 4.

IV. Eligibility Requirements

1.Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and in good health.

2.Academic background and age requirements for applicants:

1)Applicants for a master’s degree must hold a bachelor’s degree and be under 35 years old.

2)Applicants for a doctoral degree must hold a master’s degree and be under 40 years old.

3.Applicants must have a certain language proficiency (mandatory):

1)For programs taught in Chinese: At least HSK Level 4.

2)For programs taught in English (if English is not the official language of the applicant’s home country): Submit an IELTS score of 6.0, a TOEFL score of 80, or other official English proficiency certificates.

4.Applicants for undergraduate programs must take the CSCA exam.

V. Application Methods and Procedures

For Chinese Government Scholarship – Country-Specific Award (Type A)

Applicants shall submit applications to the international student dispatching authority of their home country or the Chinese Embassy (Consulate-General) in their home country, and complete the registration on the Chinese Government Scholarship International Student Management Information System.

Note: You may contact our university to apply for the Pre-Admission Letter.

For Chinese Government Scholarship – Independent Enrollment Program (Type B)

Applicants must first complete the registration on the Chinese Government Scholarship International Student Management Information System, then complete the registration on the USTB International Student Application System.

Note: There is no need to submit the Pre-Admission Letter when registering on the Chinese Government Scholarship Management System. After the university confirms the admission list, applicants will be notified and receive the Pre-Admission Letter, which must then be supplemented and submitted to the Chinese Government Scholarship Management System.

Note: The application fee is non-refundable regardless of admission result.

3.After receiving the Pre-Admission Letter, submit it to the Chinese Government Scholarship International Student Management Information System to complete the registration.

Note: For the Chinese Government Scholarship – Independent Enrollment Program (Type B), the university institution code is 10008.

VI. Application Deadline

2026 "High-Level Postgraduate" Program: November 1, 2025 – March 15, 2026

2026 "Silk Road" Program: March – April 2026 (subject to the official scholarship program notice)

VII. Application Materials

All materials must be submitted as electronic versions of originals or notarized copies.

Degree certificates (bachelor’s and master’s degrees): Original notarized copies in Chinese or English.

Note: Graduating students shall provide a pre-graduation certificate or enrollment certificate during the application. After admission, they must supplement and submit the degree certificate to obtain admission qualification.

1.Academic transcripts (bachelor’s and master’s studies): Including all courses and grading standards; original notarized copies in Chinese or English.

2.Personal statement (including research plan): At least 1,000 words for master’s applicants and 1,500 words for doctoral applicants, written in Chinese or English.

3.Two recommendation letters: Provided by professors or associate professors, with at least one recommender familiar with the applicant’s current major.

4.Language proficiency certificates:

1) For programs taught in Chinese: HSK Level 5 (applicants with HSK Level 4 may apply for 1 additional year of Chinese language training).

2) For programs taught in English (if English is not the official language of the applicant’s home country): IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 80, or other official English proficiency certificates.

5.Copy of passport (ordinary passport).

6.Health certificate.

IX. Admission Results

The International Student Center will announce the admission list and send admission documents (such as the admission letter) in July. Please carefully confirm the mailing address or collection method when filling out the application form.

New students must bring the original bachelor’s/master’s degree certificates and graduation certificates for re-verification of admission qualification during registration.
